Obituary for May Ione Glumac (Bates)

Ione Bates Glumac, 77 years of age, passed away October 11th, 2019. Ione was born September 1, 1942 in Denver Colorado. Her early years were spent in Alamosa with parents May and William Bates. The family moved to Dalhart, Texas where she subsequently graduated from Dalhart High School. Ione returned to Alamosa to attend Adams State College graduating in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education. She furthered her education with a Masters in Education again, from Adams State in 1967. An opportunity to complete her student teaching assignment in La Veta introduced Ione to Huerfano County. She began her teaching career in Walsenburg with Huerfano RE 1 in the fall of 1964 with the assignment of junior high instrumental music. Over a 35 year career, Ione taught instrumental music to junior and senior high school students, and served in an administrative role in junior high with discipline and supervision. Retirement allowed Ione the time and freedom to pursue a passion and further develop her artistic talent in multiple mediums. Her iconic Aspen trees and bear are on display as the first alley art created in the community. Ione was committed to doing what she could to see that her community, Walsenburg, would improve and prosper. She served as a councilman representing Ward one, volunteered her artistic talents with art classes for residents at the Veterans Nursing Home and worked with multiple community organizations and art councils.
